CREATIVE ECONOMY MEETING - March 26TH

The most complex creative ideas usually emerge from dark weird periods like these… so what can we do and how can we make the most of it? 

Our goal is to connect creatives across silos, from film makers to mural artists to architects, creative startups and makers, lets help one another, collaborate and advocate together to ensure our creative economy is not discarded when it comes to funding opportunities.

Our discussions will cover:

  • How are we each making the most of this period?
  • What is the city’s economic relief package and is it for the Creative Economy?
  • How can we help each other?
  • Is there a silver lining?

  1. Through Solomon’s/The Russ Room, we’ll be selling bottled cocktails as a benefit to musicians out of work. Looking for a non-profit to partner with. Thanks for sharing this information and good luck finding a partner. Let us know if there is anything we can help you with.
  2. The Sofia Center for the Arts is providing local Sacramento musicians streaming via Zoom as a Friday night concert and allow them to raise funds via their paypal, venmo or promote their band camp.  Thanks for sharing the resource
  3. What stimulus package is being put together for self employed? Most Creatives are self employed. We don’t qualify for the loans, grants or unemployment insurance. Can you give us some kind of idea of what we are supposed to do? Independent creatives are able to take advantage of many of the CARES funding opportunities and unemployment services.   4. The Sacramento Media Center can offer studio time of live streaming perfomances for local artists and entertainers. We can stream to Facebook and Youtube and other social media sites.   6. Will a recording of this webinar be available after this ends? Yes, the recording will be available on the Atrium’s website under News as well as posted on their Facebook page.
  7. The Arts Council is part of the Govs GOBiz team. What exactly is the Gov allocating from the billion dollars the legislature gave him for covid 19 response to arts? Most of these funds are for direct relief and not focused on the arts.
  8. England just released a payment supplement for self employed that is calculated on their last 3 years income. Can we do that? This was answered during meeting.
  9. Why are so many self employed still getting denied for these grant, loans, and unemployment insurance? They are opening some funds for self-employed but final language is still being determined. There will be some payments, based on income level, that everyone will be getting.
  10. Is there a minimum legal definition for “self-employed creative”… tax ID #, business license, a record of paying into payroll taxes etc…? Per the web: Self-employed refers to a person who operates a business or profession as a sole proprietor, partner in a partnership, independent contractor, or consultant. Self-employed individuals report their income on Schedule C of Form 1040.

  12. During the COVID-19 Quarantine what should a person do if they were contracted for work and a person did not pay for work that was completed. Are the courts still open for small claims? Yes the courts are still open except for jury trials
  13. Can SCOE collaborate with KVIE on launching online curriculum and arts and science engagement? I had heard that sac city was doing that. Good question for Eric Guerra who worked on that!
  14. When the all clear is given the Sacramento Mandarins will be opening up our Mandarins Event Center for non-profits to hold pasta feed fundraisers. We will make it a turnkey fund raiser where we take care of all of the food, drinks and facilities. The non-profit partner will just need to sell tickets and show up. Great resource.   15. What is being done about landlords evicting people who file the paperwork who cannot pay rent? Some landlords have been still evicting people utilizing other excuses like dogs barking, noise complaints and other things. My landlord wanted to come out and do an inspection at random which seemed like the were looking for excuses in case we didn’t pay rent. Please visit our Resource page which lists the new rules put in place by Governor Newsom to ensure evictions do not happen during the crisis.
  16. Will arts funding be one of the priorities being considered when the regional foundation unveils its forthcoming grant opportunities? This was answered during the meeting.
  17. 916 Ink just launched 916 Ink at Home— we are an arts-based literacy and creative writing nonprofit. We’re offering free online curriculum for kids stuck at home and even some zoom coaching for youth writers. Fantastic! Thanks for sharing.
  18. A BDOG giver just asked if the Sac Reg Comm Foundation could turn on the scheduled giving right now so they can give now? This was answered during the meeting.

  22. With the art programs I teach dance and have created an online dance hip hop dance course. Could that help the kids that are doing online classes? Definitely. Feel free to reach out to the Atrium if you need any help putting online  classes together.

  24. Niva — will there be extra time to edit our Big Day of Giving profile, considering that the profile I would want to put forward now would look much different than what I did in December. This was answered during the meeting.
  25. Are there resources available to help with the SBA loans? This was answered during the meeting.
  26. Could someone discuss the process of non-profits paying now laid off staff members who presumably have already applied for Unemployment Insurance?  How would keeping our laid off employees work? This was answered during the meeting.
  27. Will the city consider… allowing grantees through Office of Arts and Culture to extend their contract if they aren’t able to fulfill their scope of work due to COVID? This was answered during the meeting.
  28. Is there a possibility SRCF and the Office of Arts and Culture can provide a workshop for arts non-profits once the stimilus package is approved relating to SBA loans? This was answered during the meeting.
