RENEWED FOCUS ON OLD SAC
Why now may be the time for the long-delayed revitalization of the waterfront

Mayor Darrell Steinberg believes the city of Sacramento, once again, has a golden opportunity to remake its historic waterfront area in Old Sacramento.
He previously identified a revitalization project as a key city priority in his inaugural speech in 2016, but to date no significant changes have taken place on the city-owned land along the Sacramento River. With only months left in office before he steps away from the role, he has vowed to start a process he hopes his successor and the city will see through.
“There’s no question it needs updating,” Steinberg said. “It needs to be modernized to bring in more restaurants, a hotel, more access to the river, and greater utilization of the existing market spaces. It’s not living up to its potential.”
