Sacramento Creative Economy Meeting April 16

Sharing opportunities for Sacramento creatives and a new project in formation designed to uplift the entire sector. City has a $44 million deficit and budget negotiations are happening. If we’re not at the table with strong, solid ideas, we’ll find ourselves on the chopping block. Looking for creatives and groups who want to be part of these proposed project proposals.

Do you want to be an Arts Commissioner?

19:11:17 From Janine Mapurunga to Everyone:
If you’re a commissioner does that mean that you the grant and public art opportunities are not applicable to you?

19:12:32 From Justina Martino to Everyone:
Replying to “If you’re a commissioner does that mean that you t…”:
There are “conflicts of interest” to consider. Commissioners check with the city attorney’s office to see if opportunities are conflicts. Jason may be able to speak more on this.

Downtown partnership was talking about plans for K Street a couple of years ago… but there was the issue with property owners of vacant buildings living outside of Sacramento.

19:17:21 From Alyssa Meiszinger to Everyone:
omg thats a really cool idea, Shira

19:18:55 From Jefferson Eisenberg to Everyone:
Replying to “Downtown partnership was talking about plans for K…”:
Donald had mentioned the idea of implementing a vacancy tax on absent commercial property owners

19:19:07 From Justina Martino to Everyone:
Replying to “Downtown partnership was talking about plans for K…”:
I have heard that idea too. I think it’s a good one.

19:19:15 From Michelle Dahl to Everyone:
If we can couple the fine for vacant spaces to a fund that supports the program you are suggesting

19:19:15 From Jason Jong (he/him) to Everyone:
Replying to “If you’re a commissioner does that mean that you t…”:
@Janine Mapurunga The short answer is that is really does depend on each situation. One consideration is whether the Commission body had a role in developing the specific opportunity.

I do encourage you and others interested in applying to reach out, and if there are specific situations which may be unclear, or which you feel may pose an actual or perceived conflict, we will work with city attorney team to clarify further.

19:19:43 From Rhean Goodgame to Everyone:
Incredible idea.

19:20:33 From Janine Mapurunga to Everyone:
Shira, is there an interest list about this? Maybe some listening sessions, roundtable meetings?

19:22:17 From Jefferson Eisenberg to Everyone:
would the application for a biz front require a biz proposal?

19:22:55 From Janine Mapurunga to Everyone:
Shira this is a great seed idea. How can K street be safer though? I was attacked last year at 8:30am on my way to the Creative Alliance conference… I’ve heard many people say they would never go to K street.

19:22:55 From Michelle Dahl to Everyone:
does it have to be limited to retail? another WAL wouldn’t hurt~!

19:25:37 From Justina Martino to Everyone:
I am in a new studio, gallery space at 2nd and K if we ever want to have a brainstorm session there

19:25:44 From Michelle Dahl to Everyone:
go ahead and add me to that email list Shira!!

19:25:51 From Alyssa Meiszinger to Everyone:
maybe consider a 3 year plan since it will take at least 8-12 months to start to change that general community mindset of K st being “crime ridden” or “dangerous”

19:26:08 From Janine Mapurunga to Everyone:
Yes Richard!

19:26:22 From Justina Martino to Everyone:
To richard’s point, it would be cool to make a model that can extend to all districts. D6 is in need of art activations as well.

19:26:25 From Janine Mapurunga to Everyone:
In person brainstorm session!

19:26:59 From Jefferson Eisenberg to Everyone:
I agree-D2 Blvd is perfect for this sort of idea

19:27:31 From Justina Martino to Everyone:
I recently started working with a gallery in Long Beach that works with their city to do these types of activations so we could touch base with them to see how that has worked out for Long Beach.

19:28:28 From Janine Mapurunga to Everyone:
Yes, to Justina’s point, reaching out to arts communities in other cities for research on what has been done that has worked – artist centered type of projects.

19:29:53 From Jefferson Eisenberg to Everyone:
I second that!

19:30:20 From Richard Falcon to Everyone:
I will bring the wine!

19:30:24 From Justina Martino to Everyone:
